This page explains the system in everyday language — for owners and managers who run shops, not servers. You do not need to understand coding to use this software well.
Think of the server as a really good computer in a secure building whose full-time job is to run your business software — the same way an office computer would, but stronger, always on, and shared by Gympie, Murgon, tablets, and phones.
The screens you open (shop website, staff menus, manager pages, till app, hub) are mostly windows into that computer. They gather what people type or scan, and they show answers. The real work — stock numbers, sales, payroll maths, end-of-day balance, supplier orders — happens on the server.
You could run software only on a computer under the counter. Many old systems did. A server-side system is different on purpose. Here is why that matters for Carney's.
| Server system (what we built) | Local only (one shop PC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the “truth” lives | One central place for Gympie + Murgon stock, sales, money, people. | Often on one machine — hard to share cleanly across two stores. |
| If a till tablet dies | Buy a new tablet, sign in — business data is still on the server. | Risk of losing or rebuilding data if that PC fails. |
| Speed for many users | Server is built to answer many shops and staff at once. | Office PC slows down when everyone hits it; Wi‑Fi in one shop only. |
| Reliability | Always on, backups, professional hosting, less “someone unplugged the PC”. | Depends on power, dust, updates, who turns it off at night. |
| Updates & support | We update the server once — every tablet and shop gets the same system. | Every PC may be a different version; harder to support. |
| Working away from the shop | Owner can open Finance / reports from home (with login). | Usually need to be on that shop machine or complicated remote access. |
Server-side is the path we design for. It keeps one shared set of numbers for both stores, makes tablets simple, and keeps deployments consistent. Local-only setups vary too much from site to site (different PCs, Windows versions, backups, who “owns” the machine) for a reliable roll-out.
You still use ordinary devices — phones, tablets, PCs — as windows. You do not need to manage the server yourself day to day.
All of those point at the same business brain on the server
